One of those sinking feelings set in yesterday, after deciding to accept Windows XP's suggestion to upgrade from IE6 to IE7, IE crashed when trying to start an Oracle Forms session via Oracle JInitiator version 1.3.1 (Oracle Applications Release 11.5.10.2).
The detailed error message was:
Error Signature, AppName: iexplore.exe AppVer: 7.0.6000.16544 ModName: jvm.dll, ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 0000e348.
Couple of Googles later, I found that upgrading to Sun JRE could solve the problem. Or replacing jvm.dll in the hotspot directory of Jinitiator with a later version, like j2re1.4.2_06... but thats too much work late at night.
So to Metalink, found Note:399635.1 which referred to disabling add-on Windows Live Toolbar in IE6 ... but that add-on wasn't there in IE7. So took a guess at one of the other Windows Live add-ons, and hey presto, all good again, solution:
In IE7:
Tools, Manage Add-ons, Enable or Disable Add-ons
Show: Add-ons that have been used by Internet Explorer
Click on "Windows Live Sign-In Helper"
Click Disable, Okay
Restart Internet Explorer
Update: As commented by Paul, a couple of other add-ons could be causing this, so if disabling "Windows Live Sign-In Helper" doesn't fix it, try:
- Shockwave Flash Object (Flash9e.ocx)
- Google Toolbar (googletoolbar1.dll)
Not sure the impact to Windows Live et al... will face that if I need it...

Exact same problem happened. IE 7 and FireFox both crash, with same message. However, I don't have any Windows Live add-ons of any description enabled. Could any other add-on be the cause?

One by one went through all add-ons in IE and narrowed down to two of them causing the problem:
Shockwave Flash Object (Flash9e.ocx)
Google Toolbar (googletoolbar1.dll)
So have both disabled, however, this doesn't resolve FireFox crashing, but I'll make do with IE for now (did not upgrade FF in any way, only IE).

Thanks for the input. I'm getting a surprising number of hits on this post, so I'll add your solution to the main post too. With regards to FF if its the same error, you might want to find the jvm.dll being used by FF and change it to a working one and see if it resolves your problem - otherwise upgrade time!

You get a windows message box with the details in. Can't remember if you need to click a "Show details" button or something on the window that first pops up.

How did you replace the jvm.dll? From where did you get the working jvm.dll?

I just searched my machine for jvm.dll and found the j2re1.4.2_06 version worked ... but better to disable the conflicting plugin. Also can try multiple java JVM registry fix for SecureStaticVersioning to see if that fixes the issue.

Thanks for this great post. I had to disable "Windows Live Sign-In Helper" and a "PicLens for Internet Explorer" add-on that I installed recently. I think the issues started after installing the PicLens add-on.

Hello, I had kind of similar problem with IE7 and Oracle E.Business Suite. My problem is that, in some moment users can be working normally. And in any point of their activity IE7 just "stops" and we have to KILL all processes of Iexplore in order to "reconnect" and work again...
This issue is driving us crazy.. We already discarded database issues, in the exact moment of the "stop" we checked concurrence problems.. and didn't find any of them-..

Ouch, that's not nice.
I'd recommend switching on the Java JRE EnableSecureStaticVersioning option and disabling Java Updates see my post here:

Also have you tried switching on the Java Console and if so, any error message there?
Lastly, if you are running JInitiator then you could try switching to the Sun Java Plugin.

HI, we have been having this problem off and on for about a year now. Some tricks work, and some don't. Now we are at the point where we have some Pentium 4 systems that nothing is working! Any suggestions?? We thought it was profile related, but it ends up coming right back to IE closing and erroring.
OMG! So I JUST came across something!! If the user (win xp pro sp2/3, IE7, P4)visits our Sharepoint Intranet Page BEFORE going to Oracle and launching App Forms (JInitiator), then IE crashes... But if they close all IE browsers, open an IE browser, do NOT visit the Sharepoint site, and go to Oracle EBS. It will work successfully! We are going to dig in to it more to find out why, but at least we have a work around now.

I had this issue, and realized that I had recently installed a PayPal plug-in in IE that might be causing it. I disabled the PayPal plugin, and it no longer crashed. Thank you!

I have applied all measures mentioned in these posts like disabled the Active controls, Jave auto update but still facing the same issue, I have IE-8 it crashes with the error of jvm.dll and does not load the oracle forms properly.
Not aware of IE8 being supported yet. Watch Steven Chan's blog. Try FireFox.

Hi, was having these problem, later i reconfigure options on IE:
tools --> internet options --> security --> advanced options --> resstore configuration.
These options reintall ie options and solve the proble.
But yesterday we install Kaspersky internet security and problem come back again, and there isn't way to solve it. It not happens on FF ?¿?¿

Upgrade your Sun JRE to say 1.6 Update 7. Watch out for compatibility issues with 1.6 Update 10.

I'm having the same problem with IE crashing. It works on 2 of our computers and crashes on 2. I've disabled all of the applications suggested and have replaced the jvm.dll file to no avail. If there are any other possible fixes, I'd really appreciate the help. TIA

Seems to be a similar issue with me, however as soon as I launch the application (EBS) it still shuts down on me even with all the add ons disabled.............
Going to throw the laptop out the window in a minute. Doesnt even work on Mozilla. Same issue
